After last week's lay out of the building, this week a little bit of its history.  In the booklet it is called 'one of the oldest and most remarkable buildings' in the city of Arnhem.
The first mention of it dates from 1310 when count Reinoud I bought the terrain from 'the Abbey of Plums'.
In 1545 the building is called the House of Erkelentz and housed the chancellery of the then  duchy of Gelre (now the province of Gelderland). The emperor Charles V was the owner of the duchy from 1543 onwards.
In 1649 the chancellery moved and the building was sold to private citizens.
In 1672 the house was visited by the French king Louis XIV, coming to see his wounded general and ally the famous prince of Condé.
The Compañia Holandesa of the Hesselink Brothers bought the building in stages: in 1879 its southern part and in 1883 the northern part. In 1891 the eastern parts were added, doubling the wine storage space...
