Yesterday I was grateful to be at a wonderful, wonderful memorial/tribute to the brilliant, idiosyncratic Kevin Rafferty whose films* showed the indie doc world (and the world at large) how to use humor as a subversive art.

Beautiful, moving, funny stories from his wife Paula Longendyke, daughter Madeleine Rafferty, brother Pierce Rafferty, Michael Moore (who Kevin mentored when he started making Roger and Me), Anne Bohlen, and many others.

One moment I’ll never forget: one of Kevin and Pierce’s relatives standing up at the world premiere of The Atomic Cafe shouting about how it was commie propaganda. He had to be escorted from the theater.

Also, as these things always are, a gathering of the community. So good to see and be with Deborah Shaffer, Sandra Schulberg, Gini Reticker, Susan Morris and David Leitner, Wendy Blackstone, Margaret Crimmins, Jacki Ochs, Karen Cooper and so many others.

We will miss you, Kevin!!
